Gardening in July

Add a splash of color to your patio or porch for your summer parties. There is still time to fill those planters or hanging baskets with lovely, long-lasting annual and perennial combinations.  Not sure which plants to put together?  Not to worry. We can help!

Yes, you can plant trees, shrubs and perennials in the middle of summer! The key is to remember the difference between planting and transplanting. Transplanting (digging out of the ground to move to another location) can only be done when the weather is cool and the plant won’t get stressed out. Planting a plant from a pot/planter (for example, one purchased from a garden center) for the first time can be done any time of the year. Plants that are newly established will need to be well watered by allowing water to penetrate deep into the soil.

~ Apply mulch 3-4 inches deep to retain moisture and control weeds.
~ Prop up tree branches as they become heavy with fruit.
~ Stake tomatoes and other plants that may need support as fruits, vegetables, and blossoms become large.
~ Remove faded rose blossoms.
~ Deadhead or prune annuals and perennials to encourage new blooms and improve plant appearance.  Rudbeckia and Echinacea are just a couple of perennials that benefit from deadheading.

July is often the hottest month of the year in Michigan and right now it seems to be holding true. Remember to keep your lawn and garden watered to minimize stress on plants. If possible, irrigate in the early morning to minimize evaporation and conserve water.
